The Difference Between Turbine Flowmeters and Vortex Flowmeters

In the field of industrial flow measurement, turbine flowmeters and vortex street flowmeters are commonly used flow measurement instruments, but they have significant differences in their working principles, performance characteristics, and applicable scenarios.

The working principle of a turbine flowmeter

The working principle of a turbine flowmeter is based on the conservation of momentum. When the fluid flows through the turbine flowmeter, it impacts the turbine blades, causing the turbine to rotate. The speed of the turbine is proportional to the flow rate of the fluid.

The speed of the turbine is converted into an electrical signal of the corresponding frequency through a magneto electric induction converter, and the flow rate value is obtained after signal processing.

Advantages of Turbine Flowmeter

Turbine flowmeter has high measurement accuracy, good repeatability, wide range ratio, and is suitable for measuring the flow rate of clean, low viscosity liquids and gases, such as precise measurement of finished oil, natural gas and other media in industries such as petroleum, chemical, and food. However, turbine flow meters require high fluid cleanliness as impurities may wear down turbine blades, affecting measurement accuracy and service life. Therefore, filters are generally installed upstream of them.

The vortex flowmeter operates based on the Karman vortex principle in fluid mechanics.

When the fluid flows through the vortex generator inside the pipeline, vortices are alternately generated on both sides of the vortex generator, forming vortex columns, also known as Karman vortex streets.

The frequency of vortices is directly proportional to the flow velocity of the fluid, and by detecting the vortex frequency, the flow rate of the fluid can be calculated. Vortex flowmeter does not require external power, is easy to install and maintain, and can measure the flow of steam, gas, and liquid, especially widely used in steam flow measurement.

It has a certain adaptability to changes in temperature, pressure, and density of fluids, but its measurement accuracy is relatively low compared to turbine flow meters, and the measurement effect is poor at low flow rates. At the same time, it is susceptible to external factors such as pipeline vibration.

Overall, turbine flow meters focus on high-precision measurement of clean fluids, while vortex street flow meters have advantages in a wide measurement range, adaptability to multiple media, and easy installation.

In practical applications, users need to consider the specific measurement medium, working conditions, and measurement requirements comprehensively before selecting the appropriate flow meter to ensure the accuracy and reliability of flow measurement.
